HISTORY of COINS in AZERBAIJANBack to Main

“Occupation” Coinage, Foreign Conquests in Azerbaijan
(13th Century-14th Century C.E.)

Azerbaijan’s economic boom in the 11th and 12th centuries C.E. was halted with the invasion of the Mongols and Tatar armies under the command of Chingiz Khan’s descendants in the 1220s. New coins were minted under Mongol rule, in the Mongol Hulagu state (Ilkhanate) founded in Azerbaijan. The Hulagu state struck silver dirhams, mainly in the Barda and Nakhichevan regions in Azerbaijan.
