It is believed that the tar is the root of the English word guitar.
The tar also is linked to the setar and dutar of Iran and the sitar of India.

Sadig Asadoglu (also known as Mirza Sadig [Azerbaijani: Sadıqcan],
also spelled Sadikhjan or Sadiqjan; 1846-1902) was a well known tar player
in the Caucasus region when he invented the Azerbaijani version of the tar.
