Abbasid Caliphate

When the Umayyad Caliphate, later replaced by the Abbasid Caliphate, both pertaining to Arab Muslim dynasties, conquered the Sassanid Empire, the Christian kingdom Caucasian Albania also fell and was absorbed into the new caliphate. Islam over time would become the dominant religion in the region.

The Abbasid Empire or Caliphate (750-1258 C.E.) was ruled by descendants of the Prophet Muhammad’s youngest uncle, Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib. This map shows the caliphate at its largest, about 850 C.E. Islam remains the dominant religion in Azerbaijan to this day.
