The Church of Kiş, built several times over by Caucasian Albanians between the 5th and 7th centuries C.E.,is located in the village of Kiş, about 5 km (3 mi.) north of Sheki, Azerbaijan.

Caucasian Albanians

Caucasian Albanians (unrelated to modern-day Albanians in southern Europe) are among the most culturally influential of the early settlers of the Caucasus. Caucasian Albania existed for many centuries, and there is extensive archaeological evidence of their civilization. From their shamanist roots, the Caucasian Albanian tribes living in eastern parts of Azerbaijan embraced Zoroastrianism and then eventually adopted Christianity as their state religion in 313 AD.
